The universe is expanding. Therefore, it was once smaller. The universe is cooling. Therefore, it was once hotter. Put them together and you get a hot, dense spot that expanded. That's the big bang in a nutshell.
I think the suggestions above me are great!
I've always liked the analogy of an inflating balloon with colored dots (representing galaxies). It's a good analogy for the expansion of space. And then you can ask them what will happen if we ran time in reverse (like rewinding a movie) and let them slowly let the air out of the balloon, right back to the big bang!
