How do you test bacteria in water with agar gel?

For my science fair project we were testing the bacteria content in water but i'm not really sure how to with the agar. Please help!How do you test bacteria in water with agar gel?
i would warm agar gel in the microwave for about 2 minutes than put it in the dish and about about 15 mL of water in it the place it under an incubator. hopefully the it will grow or i will fail my science project.How do you test bacteria in water with agar gel?
Prepare Petri dishes with an agar layer and plate out a known quantity of water. See what colonies grow. I would drop 1ml (or less, m ay 0.5ml) in the middle of a plate and spread it with with a sterile swab; incubate it at 30-37 for 24-36 hours...
